The Shipping News (2001, Canada)
Sad Sack Quoyle is sleep walking thru life at menial jobs, no family, when as luck would have it he witnesses a domestic dispute on the street. High-strung hellcat Petal flees her partner and jumps in Quoyle’s car yelling “Drive”.
Quoyle takes her for something to eat, at the diner she looks at his watch then tells him “It’s 8:05, I’m going to screw you by 10:00”. Cut to Petal bouncing up and down on Quoyle 6:10.
Time lapses, she’s pregnant and pissed. Next Quoyle is washing the baby and on the phone to Petal who’s in a bar with some guy in Alabama and phoning Quoyle how to make an Alabama Slamma.
Jump ahead 6 years, Quoyle is at home with his daughter, Petal comes stumbling in laughing with some guy and into her bedroom. 8:40
Next Petal’s in the bar with some rando, asks him “You want to marry me don’t ya?” Then she’s packing, grabs her daughter and she’s off. The police phone Quoyle they found her and her boyfriend drowned in the river after driving off a bridge. She had sold their daughter to a black market adoption agency.
Quoyle’s aunt shows up, she’s off to Newfoundland, the land of the Quoyles. Quoyle and his daughter move to Newfoundland with her, the rest of the movie is Quoyle’s luck changing, making a life for himself and daughter in Newfoundland.
