Synopsis:

Anya (Anna Melnikova) lives in a small town, works as a beautician, and dreams of a career in Moscow. However, unexpected circumstances force Maxim to leave abruptly, and their relationship comes to an end. Plot

Anya (Anna Melnikova) lives in the small town of Dubrovsk, works as a beautician at a local salon, and dreams of moving to Moscow; she feels she cannot build a career in the provinces, and life with her mother and stepfather—who makes unwanted, suggestive advances toward her—has become unbearable. After another argument, she rushes outside and nearly gets hit by a car. The driver is Maxim (Artur Sopelnik), the son of a Moscow businessman who has come to town on business; he falls for her at first sight. He asks her out and declares that he will stay in town and pursue her until she reciprocates his feelings. Anya, unaccustomed to male attention, willingly accepts his courtship. However, this situation displeases Maxim’s father, who had planned for his son to marry the daughter of a business partner. He tricks Maxim into returning to Moscow and blocks Anya’s number on his phone.

Believing Maxim has abandoned her, Anya tries to forget him. Some time later, she moves to Moscow after landing an internship at a prestigious beauty salon. She leaves no forwarding address. Maxim, unable to understand why he cannot reach Anya, returns to Dubrovsk but fails to find her. Convinced she does not want to continue the relationship, he falls into a depression but eventually recovers and begins preparing for a wedding to his father's partner's daughter.

Soon, Anya discovers she is pregnant. She decides to keep the father's identity a secret and raise the offspring on her own. When she goes into labor while out and about, a police officer named Alexey (Denis Vasiliev)—who happens to be nearby—helps her get to the maternity hospital. He falls for Anya; upon learning that she is estranged from the baby's father and has nowhere to live, he picks her up from the hospital and invites her to stay with him. Anya and Alexey grow fond of each other and begin planning a wedding, but Alexey becomes jealous of every man she interacts with. Eventually, he loses control, and Anya realizes she must flee to save her own life and that of her offspring.

Those who read my posts know that I’m not a fan of Russian cinema, for a variety of reasons (this has nothing to do with the war; We only talk about cinema here).

I found myself watching this film all the way through without hitting the fast-forward button.

At one point, I was even moved by what happens to Anya, the main character. That made me forget about the subplot involving the fiancée's infidelity.
