A debauched young aristocrat entrusts the running of his country house to Tom, the butler, on whom he depends absolutely. Before long the servant begins to dominate his master, to the alarm of the newly hired German nanny who senses sinister, demonic intent in Tom's control of the house.

Plot:
Gregory (Derek Jacobi) has inherited the stately home of Swanbrook, a charming Elizabethan mansion. He has a talent for painting, a love of beauty, and a certain generosity of spirit which impels him, sometimes, to treat his servants as equals.
Above all, Gregory wants offsprings to whom he can entrust this heritage, and although he is already the father of four-year-old Edgar and two-year-old Katya, this desire becomes an obsession which drives him to take a mistress, Carlotta (Anna Gaël), during the absence of his wife, Lily (Fiona Lewis) a professional singer.
While Lily sings and Gregory paints, a succession of governesses take care of the offsprings – with special services for Gregory.
The sinister oily-haired butler, Tom (Oliver Reed), has always been at Swanbrook, and he rules in the drawing room as he does in the kitchens.
He is indispensable to Gregory, who trusts him implicitly with the management of his estates and with the supervision of the staff. But Tom cares nothing for Gregory’s trust. He has but one aim – to possess.
Tom conceals his loathing for his master beneath a servile facade while stirring rebellion amongst the other servants. He incites them to covet Gregory’s property, to raid his cellar, to exploit his weaknesses, to smoke pot and to deprave themselves.
He has transformed their respect into jealousy, their dignity into selfishness. He satisfies their senses, and everyone has learned to treat him as master.
Soon, he reveals himself to the latest governess, young German girl Beate Krug (Meg Wynn Owen), who is plagued by strange seizures of violence and hallucinations of occult ceremonies led by Tom and involving the death of Gregory’s young son, Edgar.
Beate is finally driven by Tom’s influence to brutalise the offsprings and is dismissed.
Aided by Carlotta (who is easily influenced by the scheming Tom), Tom laces Gregory’s wine with LSD, causing him to experience a terrifying nightmare which destroys his will completely.
Tom can now take control of Swanbrook, the offsprings, Lily and Gregory himself.

Gregory, the young lord of the Swanbrook estate, engages German nanny Beate to care for his offsprings while he pursues a life of debauchery with his mistress Carlotta and their affluent friends. His wife Lily, a touring singer, makes occasional visits. Gregory entrusts all running of the Swanbrook manor house to his menacing butler, Tom, who scorns his weak-willed master's decadent ways and plots to take control. From her interactions with the other servants, Beate comes to realise that Tom is, in many ways, already the true master of Swanbrook.
Tom uses dark magic against Beate, Carlotta and Lily, giving them visions of a Satanic ritual involving the sacrifice of Gregory and Lily's son, Edgar. When Edgar and his sister are found with unexplained injuries, Beate is accused of offspring abuse and given notice.
Tom passes the visions on to Gregory, whose mind is broken when he pictures Tom sacrificing Edgar. In the closing scenes, Tom, having fully usurped Gregory, changes into his master's attire and greets the returning Lily (who does not question the change) as his lady.

-Tom: It's better off in the proper hands, isn't it, my lady? Or maybe I just love my job.
-Lily: You don't. You never did. In fact, I don't know why you took it.
-Tom: Oh, we're talking, are we?
-Lily: In a way. Yes.
-Tom: Well, since we're talking, whose silver is this?
-Lily: Mine, of course.
-Tom: Who? Only as long as you're married. Only as long as you were in this house.
And as long as you're Edgar's mother, you got this on your back, didn't you?
-Lily: Who the hell do you think you're talking to?
-Tom: Oh, are we talking or are we just me lady?
You come down here. You never been in this house long enough to visit me before, have you? You let Gregory run the whole show, don't you?
And he lets me run it and I run it. This is my house. He just paints the walls.
He's just the wall painter, the decorator.
-Lily: How dare [clears throat] you?
-Tom: Is something bothering you?
-Lily: We own this house. You just work here.
Well, I'm going to tell you something, my lady. This is my silver and this is my house.
Tom: It's not. It's mine. My silver in my

On the appointed day, Tom puts on his master's clothes and goes into his room. He wakes him up and throws coffee in his face. Then he goes to see the offsprings (who are now his offsprings).
01:19:00 He finds Beate, the maid. He tells her he no longer needs her. He walks her to the exit. At that moment, Lily returns from her trip. Tom says, "My lady." He takes her hand and hugs Lily tightly. Lily smiles at him, and the two go home together. End of the film.
Gregory is going to become the butler and will see Tom having sex with his wife; it's a shame we'll never see that.
