Plot summary
After serving four years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, Neil Skinner (Pierce Brosnan) returns to a fictional Ocean Downs Racetrack in San Diego to exact revenge on Ebbet Berens (Tom Skerritt), the partner who set him up to gain control of their racetrack security business, and to win back Sheila Atkins (Wendy Hughes), their third business partner and Skinner's ex-lover, who believes him guilty and is now Berens' lover.
Despite Berens' attempts to get rid of him, and interference from Sheila and police Det. Leland (Tom Atkins), Skinner uses his intimate knowledge of the track's security systems and personnel to set up an elaborate heist – the goals of which are to land Berens in jail and convince Sheila of his innocence - thereby winning her back.

Neil Skinner (Pierce Brosnan) served several years in prison despite being innocent. Now free, he plans to take revenge on the man who put him there: not only did his partner Ebbet Berens (Tom Skerritt) frame him with smuggled emeralds, but he also stole Neil's girlfriend, Sheila (Wendy Hughes).
Embittered, Neil assembles a team of specialists for a heist designed to clear his name and put his rival behind bars. There is a romantic complication, however: Sheila finds herself back by Neil's side—at least for the time being...
With roles like this—playing a gentlemanly figure—Pierce Brosnan was already positioning himself for his future turn as secret agent 007, James Bond. Brosnan would later remain loyal to the heist movie genre; his appearance in *The Thomas Crown Affair*, for instance, centers on a caper as cleverly orchestrated as the one in *The Heist*.
