Cheating Scenes in The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

The wife’s (Meryl Streep) husband and their 2 children go to a state fair, living her alone in their farmhouse. A photographer comes by her house asking her for directions to a bridge. She comes with him to the bridge herself. Inside the vehicle, the photographer’s hand brushes against the wife’s leg while taking something from the compartment.

The wife and the photographer talk and share some laughs at the bridge. She invites him to dinner at her house, where they talk some more. She invites him to drink brandy with him. At one point she looks bothered, so the photographer tells her that they’re not doing anything wrong, nothing that she couldn’t tell her kids. Nothing does happen at this point, but she is starting to fall for him, so she makes a note inviting him again to dinner the next day and posts it on the bridge. We see some partial frontal nudity from the wife when she opens her robe outside her house for some air, and also when she’s in front of the mirror, but I think it’s a body double.

On the next night, the photographer takes a bath in the wife’s bathroom. While the wife is lying in the bathtub, she thinks how intensely erotic it is that she is lying where the photographer had run down his body earlier. In fact, all things about the photographer have begun to seem erotic to her.

The wife wears a nice dress for their dinner and the photographer says she looks stunning. While the wife is talking to somebody on the phone, she begins to touch and caress his shoulders while he is sitting on a chair. He touches her hand in response. They dance and kiss several times. Then they have sex in front of the fireplace, but it isn’t shown and we only get to see them after they do it, lying naked beside each other under a blanket and kissing several times while talking. They also take a bath in the tub together, with her lying naked on top of him.

They travel the next day somewhere far from the wife’s town, go to a jazz bar, and then have sex later. We see a few seconds of it, with the wife on top, showing her naked back and butt, but it’s dark so we really don’t see much and we’re not sure if it’s Meryl Streep or a body double. Probably the latter.

After an intense talk, the wife packs her things up to run away with the photographer. However, she changes her mind and decides to stay. So the photographer leaves.

The wife’s family arrives, completely clueless about her tryst in the last four days. The husband and the wife buy something from the town. While the husband is inside the shop, the photographer shows himself to the wife from a distance. At an intersection, the photographer’s truck is in front of the couple’s truck. The wife sees him take out the necklace she gave him from the compartment and hangs it in his mirror. The wife cries. When her husband asks her what’s wrong, she tells him to just give her some time, so the husband is clueless that the wife is crying because of her lover.

A sad love story.
