Based on a switched identity, in circumstances that are found in real life as well as fiction, this drama tells the story of two soldiers fighting together in World War I. Karl (Joachim Latsch) and Richard (Hans-Use Bauer) become close friends while serving time in a German POW camp. One day Karl manages a successful escape and goes to Richard's home where he seeks refuge posing as Richard. But Richard's wife Anna (Kathrin Waligura) has never given up hope that her husband is still alive -- a possibility that would shatter Karl's proposed new life. In fact, Richard did not die in the POW camp. This film shared the Grand Prix award at the 1985 Berlin Film Festival.

Cheating Notes

Karl and Richard, two German soldiers captured by the Russians in World War I, become very close friends-so close that Richard shares intimate stories about his wife, Anna. Through these stories, Karl falls in love with her in his thoughts.

Karl escapes and goes to Richard's home, and tells Anna that he is her husband, using the intimate knowledge he knows about her as told to him by Richard to convince her.

Anna isn't fooled and knows Karl is not her husband. Prior to that, she received a letter from the military that Richard died in the war but is still hoping that he is alive and will return soon. She lets Karl stay for the night, and expects him to leave tomorrow. But the next day, Karl stays and buys her something that she always wanted (that Richard probably told him) from a shop. She warms up to him, and when he hugs her from behind, she doesn't object, but instead, she makes out with him and has sex with him (36:16). We see her butt and breast briefly after sex.

Anna and Karl kiss kiss in public (56:06) and have sex again for the second time (1:00:43).

Richard comes home (1:18:02), and a confrontation between the three unfolds (1:24:17).
