Thomas and Marie are getting divorced and must meet one last weekend to empty and sell their summer house. Neither one of them knows the other’s real intentions. A young woman suddenly appears, with a jealousy-driven agenda all of her own. What was supposed to be a civilized end to a long-standing marriage turns minute by minute into a shattering weekend that turns everything in their lives, upside down.
Olof lives alone on his family’s farm after the death of his mother. Unable to read and write, he is dependent on his younger friend, Erik, who helps him in the afternoons. Once a sailor, Erik brags of having known hundreds of women. Out of the blue, Olof advertises in the local paper for a young lady housekeeper, and Ellen, a middle-class city woman, arrives to take over the house and, as the summer goes on, Olof’s heart and Erik’s desire as well.
Gerda and Kristoffer are celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in Rome, where Gerda used to study art when she was young. But the trip doesn’t go quite as planned, when the couple run into Gerda’s charismatic art teacher and former flame, Johannes. Kristoffer ends up on the sideline, while Gerda chases her youth through the streets and alleys of Rome, to confront the ghosts of the past.
