Cheating Scenes in The English Patient (1996)

Almasy (Ralph Fiennes) and the rest of his team are in the Saharan desert, mapping the place’s landscape. They are joined by the couple Geoffrey (Colin Firth) and Katharine Clifton (Kristin Scott Thomas). Supposedly, Geoffrey will work with them as a regular pilot and maybe as a cartographer as well, photographing the area from the air. Katharine is introduced to Almasy. She praised his monograph that she read earlier and tells him that it’s very impressive.

One day, Katharine is out by herself exploring a local market in Cairo. Almasy appears and gives her unsolicited advice about the price of the item she bought. They have a testy conversation. Almasy tries to make small talk but Katharine does not engage and excuses herself.

During a party the next day, Almasy dances with Katharine. It is a slow dance so they are holding each other. She tells him that she knew that he followed her from the market to the hotel yesterday. He says it’s because he is concerned about her safety, being a European woman in that part of Cairo. She asks, why follow and not escort her instead because following her seems predatory. With this, Almasy does not reply and just looks at her intensely. Katharine averts her gaze and her smile disappears from her face, replaced by some kind of tension due to his intense gaze. She looks up to try to return his intense stare and for a moment they are looking at each other’s eyes intensely. But she can’t seem to match the intensity in his eyes and looks away again.

Katharine and Almasy’s Alone time

Katharine’s husband leaves temporarily for a job somewhere. She and the rest of the group travel across the desert and meet an accident which disables some of their vehicles. They cannot all go in the only remaining vehicle so Katharine volunteers to remain with Almasy and some of their servants while the rest of the group proceed to cross the desert and will just come back for them later.

During night time, a sandstorm comes to engulf them. Katharine and Almasy take shelter in one of the vehicles while the servants stay in the other. Here they talk and become more comfortable with each other physically, as Katharine rests her head on Almasy’s arm, and Almasy strokes her hair a little bit. Nothing sexual happens between them at this point.

The next night, Almasy fires a flare so that their returning companions can locate them. Katharine is standing beside him. She asks him if she is the character “K” in the new book that he is writing. He doesn’t answer and just looks at her intensely while stroking her jaw and neck with his hand.

Your Place or Mine

When they are finally able to cross the desert, Katharine invites Almasy to come into her hotel room. Almasy declines, and when Katharine insists, he calls her “Mrs. Clifton” out loud to remind her that she’s married and that it would be inappropriate of him to go to her room. This makes her a bit angry.

It is Katharine then who comes to Almasy’s place. She enters his room and slaps him, perhaps for the insult that she got earlier when he refused her invitation. Almasy kneels down after getting slapped, hugs her waist and starts kissing her belly and touching her breasts. Katharine reaches down to kiss her, then kneels herself and makes out with him. He rips her blouse open and kisses her boobs. They drop to the floor and have sex.

After sex, she joins him in the bath tub where they talk while he rests his naked body on hers.

Hold the Moan

While a Christmas party is going on, Almasy tells Katharine to pretend that she’s sick. He says that he can still taste her in his mouth. Katharine pretends to faint. She and Almasy go to one of the rooms in the place and have sex while standing. It seems that the room they picked is just at the back of the main stage where the Christmas party is being held as the silhouette of them fucking is a bit visible through the room’s fuzzy window.

Katharine’s husband, who is actually in the party dressed as Santa Claus, comes looking for her. When he finds her sitting on a couch, he asks her how she’s feeling. He kisses her and then notices a certain smell on her. He says it smells like Marzipan. This is probably what Almasy was eating earlier. Katharine laughs it off and gets away from him in case he smells more of Almasy’s scent from her body.

Husband finds out

Katharine’s husband wants to surprise her for their anniversary. He tells her that he will go away for one night, but he actually won’t. When he comes to Katharine at their hotel to surprise her, he sees Katharine leaving the hotel. She is actually going to Almasy’s place to fuck him again. We don’t see their actual sex but we see her naked on the bed after they have done it. They continue talking on the bed and then make out again to start their second round.

Although we did not see Katharine’s husband follow her, we know that he is able to find out because he is seen drinking inside his car while it is parked outside their hotel.
