Based on the novella "Ham" by Eliza Orzeszko, The film takes place in a Belarusian village at the beginning of the 20th century. The beautiful Franka, the daughter of a Polish official, marries a Belarusian fisherman and starts regretting her fate: before her marriage, she had worked as a laundress in wealthy homes and as a prostitute. And now Franka's restless soul yearns for repentance...
However, accustomed to comfort and the good life, the city dweller will throw tantrums, run away from her husband to the city, and one day give birth to someone else's offspring. And Pavel will always patiently wait for her, forgive her, and wait again, until the tragic end.
