A romantic drama that charts the lives of three women from different backgrounds, forever changed when they emigrate to New Zealand as war brides.
In 1953, a flood adding to the aftermath of World War II swells the numbers of Dutch emigrants. On a KLM flight to New Zealand, part of a race from London, Frank de Rooy (Waldemar Torenstra), who lost his family and colonial estate in the Japanese occupation and Indonesian civil war of Independence, meets some virtual mail order brides. Ada van Holland (Karina Smulders) becomes his lover before confessing she's already married by proxy to gloomy Calvinist Derk Visser (Micha Hulshof). Jewish concentration-camp survivor Esther Cahn (Anna Drijver) dodges her engagement for a fashion career and discreetly has her son Bobby (Mykola Allen) adopted by infertile Marjorie Mullin (Elise Shaap), who did everything else right with husband Hans (Mattijn Hartemink). Over the years, some of their paths cross again, and all of the survivors meet at Frank's funeral.
Cheating Notes
Ada, one of the mail-order war brides, kisses Frank, her seatmate on the plane to New Zealand where her husband-by-proxy is waiting. They kiss beside a hangar (17:25) and on the plane (22:57).
After they land, Esther, the other war bride on the plane, meets her fiance at the airport but chooses to sleep in a hotel on day one. She meets up with Frank and fucks him on the grass (41:30). We only see the initial kissing part, and in the morning, she kisses him and says goodbye to him as he steps on the bus while her fiance is unknowingly waiting for her on the other side of the street.
Years later, when Ada's husband reads a letter of hers from Frank, he cuts her hair and has their minister give her a sermon. Ada. who has kids now, leaves their house and finds Frank. She starts living at his place in the countryside and fucks him at 1:28:27. She undresses in front of him first, they kiss and we see the after-sex cuddling and kissing scene.
Ada's husband comes to Frank's place and the two men have a fist fight. Frank chases him with a shotgun. After that, Ada fucks Frank on the kitchen sink and in the bedroom (1:36:52). She makes love to him passionately, probably because of the heightened arousal she feels when he has beaten and dominated her husband in their fight earlier. It's a hot sex scene.
