Young archaeologist Andrey arrives in an abandoned village on the banks of the Volga. He is engaged in excavations. Only his grandfather Roman, with whom Andrey is staying, remains in the village, and Sergei's family, who makes a living by secretly killing fish and selling caviar. Andrei is at first skeptical about his grandfather's efforts to restore the flooded church. He begins to court Sergei's wife, Luda, trying to brighten up his pastime with a light affair. But gradually, changes begin to occur with Andrey. He begins to help his grandfather restore the church, and his courtship of Luda develops into a serious feeling. But Luda's husband is ready to do anything to deal with Andrei, and Luda herself feels remorse, because her stepson, Sergei's son, Misha, became attached to her like she is his own mother...
