One day, as a typhoon approached and the rain and wind intensified, Tsuya's estranged husband, Chôkichi, showed up at her secluded mountain home. The two had broken up after a fight over infidelity, but four months later, Chôkichi was begging to get back together. Tsuya had no intention of returning, but Chôkichi quietly left 50,000 yen on the table and left that day. Around the same time, a young couple, Haruo and Noriko, were driving in the rain. Their faces were somewhat strained, as their breakup talk had gone awry during their drive, leading to a hit-and-run. They abandoned their car by the river and went to the station, but the trains were stopped due to the typhoon, so they found lodging nearby. The next day, Tsuya curtly turned away Chôkichi when he showed up again in the heavy rain, but her heart was wavering. Haruo followed Tsuya as she walked aimlessly down the road. She had seen him getting rid of the car earlier. Haruo was tired of having sex with Noriko and was planning to break up with her.
