Plot summary

The lives of two families, the Holts and the Abbotts, intersect in the small Illinois town of Haley in the 1950s. Two brothers, J.C. and Doug Holt, are being raised by their single working mother. Their father Charlie was a reckless risk-taker who lost his life when J.C. was two years old and before Doug was born, after driving on a frozen lake over a bet made with Lloyd Abbott. Lloyd and his distant wife, Joan, are the parents of three beautiful daughters, Alice, Eleanor, and Pamela. The parties for the girls' birthdays and other milestones are among the most anticipated events in the town.

Thinking his father's death was Lloyd's fault, J.C. seeks revenge on Lloyd through the calculated seduction of the Abbott daughters. First he seduces Eleanor, the wildest of the three. As a consequence of their relationship, she is sent away to a mental hospital, and will end up never returning to Haley again.

The small Midwest town of Haley, Illinois, in the 1950s. Teenaged brothers Jacey (Billy Crudup) and Doug Holt (Joaquin Phoenix) are brought up by single mom Helen, their father having died a long time ago. Jacey is intense, driven and determined to move ahead in life. Doug is much more mellow and awkward. Haley is dominated by the rich Abbott family, presided over by patriarch Lloyd (Will Patton).

The three Abbott daughters are objects of fascination and desire. Alice (Joana Going) is about to get married. The wild Eleanor (Jennifer Connelly) does all she can to irritate her father, including carrying on an affair with Jacey. The more timid Pamela (Liv Tyler) has eyes for Doug, but he is also infatuated with Eleanor. As Jacey and Doug transition from high school to college, Jacey runs afoul of Lloyd's anger, Eleanor disappears from town.

As mentioned in the summary, Jacey seeks to avenge his father’s death by trying to sleep with the three daughters of the man who is supposed to be responsible for his death!

He managed to carry out his plan by sleeping with two of them, but the third one played by Liv Tyler is already attracted to his brother, so there will be no interaction between them. She is the only one who seems to be insensitive to his charm.

There is only one cheating scene in the movie. It concerns Eleanor.

Alice, Her older sister was already divorced when she had a relationship with Jacey.

Jacey, after seeing Eleanor kissing her boyfriend on the balcony: "I just thought... you and steve..."

Eleanor: "Well, that's what you thought. I think steve is... I don't know.

I don't know what I think about steve. I never think about him."

Eleanor is a real bitch. She cheats on her boyfriend and she takes pleasure in doing so.
Despite her father’s warnings not to see Jayce, she does it anyway.

When her father sees her coming out of the woods arm in arm with Jayce, she kisses Jayce and touches his cock, looking her father right in the eyes.
