A young woman is tormented by nightmares of her miscarriage. She becomes unfaithful to her husband and meets various lovers. Eventually, reality begins to unfurl around her.
Cheating Notes
Madeleine gives a hitchhiker (Thomas) a ride and brings him to her husband's (Franz) mansion. She introduces the two men to each other, then she takes a swim with Thomas in the pool topless. She makes out with him and then fucks him in front of the fireplace, despite knowing that her husband is just somewhere around the house. Her husband knows what she's up to and is observing them secretly but is tolerating it. It's because her psychiatrist says he should indulge her every whim, whatever it may be.
Madeleine fucks Thomas on a speedboat in the middle of the ocean.
Madeleine's stepson, Lewis, arrives at the mansion. His dad Franz is on a business trip and he doesn't know that his dad has remarried. Madeleine introduces herself to him as his dad's secretary, not his wife. She goes horseriding with him topless, goes to the disco bar with him, etc. We don't see them kiss or have sex or know if they have become a couple at this point.
A party is held on the mansion grounds. Thomas comes with her new girlfriend Mary, who becomes drunk and starts to strip dance on the dancefloor. Madeleine takes her inside the house to rest. It seems she's attracted to her and she makes the move. She is about to make love to her in the bedroom when Franz arrives, telling her that the guests are looking for her. She leaves, Franz takes over and fucks Mary.
Madeline re-joins the party and makes out with Lewis in a secluded spot. Thomas finds out that Franz fucked Mary, enters the bedroom and starts beating him up but he stops and exits the room, goes to the pool and kills himself.
Sometime later, Mary talks to Lewis on the beach, says she loves him, and then they fuck. Franz arrives with a gun in his hand and confronts the two.
(Spoiler) Madeleine wakes up in a clinic. It turns out that all the things that we saw are part of her dream while she's in her psychotherapy session. Her real husband is Lewis, and the other characters in her dream are her psychiatrists.
