Teri (Mary McDonnel) is discovered in the desert beside the blackened husk of her car which contains the charred corpse of her husband, Allan (Randy Quaid). When forensic evidence makes her out to be her husband's murderer, she quietly protests her innocence, but makes no effort to mount a defense. Terri doesn't expect to be believed. Was it self-defense or murder? While Terri acts strangely indifferent to her own fate, her attorney tries to reconstruct what happened. The moral ambiguity and the unfathomable mysteries of the human heart are just the sort of thing her attorney had hoped to leave behind him when he left big city law.
In flashback, we see Terri's story. She and Allan have just moved to a small town in California to repair their broken marriage, because she was unfaithful back in Chicago. Allan is really angry and abusive. Teri, instead of fixing their relationship, goes again for some romantic action when she starts an affair with Jim Mercer (Benjamin Bratt), a lifeguard at the public pool where she swims.

27:38 Lifeguard and wife's first dialog, introduction and flirting. He asks for her age and says she looks good.
31:12 Husband sees lifeguard and wife talking at the pool. He confronts her angrily later at home. She tells him that no, she won't do it here, that she may have cheated on him back in Michigan but not here. He tries to hurt her physically but their daughter knocks on their door, interrupting him.
34:34 Wife tells lifeguard that her husband saw them at the pool, about her affair in Michigan, etc. He offers to kill her husband, jokingly, perhaps.
38:46 Wife has sex with lifeguard in the shower room at the public pool (she doesn't take off her swimming suit).
42:25 Wife has breakfast with lifeguard, wearing only a shirt and her panties.
54:39 After a fight with her husband where he hurts her, wife comes to lifeguard's place and has sex with him on the couch (she doesn't take off her clothes).
59:54 Wife and lifeguard sunbathe in the public pool side by side. She kisses him. He says be careful because there are people around. She says she doesn't care and asks him if he wants to fuck her. He says yes, but no fucking scene follows.
