Karen, a maths teacher, finds herself involved in a traffic accident for which she is not to blame. The accident causes the death of a girl on a scooter. Although innocent, the young woman is distraught, more so when she discovers that the dead girl – Miriam – is none other than the sister of her pupil, Lukas. The more everyone around her assures her that she is not to blame for the girl’s death, the guiltier Karen feels. To her, the accident is like an equation that just doesn’t add up. In an attempt to make up for her actions at least in part, she begins to give Lukas extra maths lessons. But, consumed by his pain, the boy wants much more from her.
The 21-year-old student Oliver Mansfeld attends a boarding school in Frankfurt. There he meets the married banker’s wife Verena. A passionate affair develops between them, which does not remain undiscovered by Verena’s husband for long.
Setting out on her own, 25-year-old Alice visits several apartments with the help of real estate agent Julien, a married man with offsprings. They soon fall in love. Around the same time, Alice takes work at Julien’s wife Marie’s tea shop. Charmed by the interest Alice shows in her, Marie lets her guard down and starts confiding in her. In return, Alice, tells Marie about her affair with a married man. Things come to a head when Julien has a car accident and the affair is exposed.
