In director Vicente Aranda's adaptation of the classic opera, a French writer documents the seductive power of the beautiful Gypsy Carmen, who turns her charms on a young soldier, awakening his passions but ultimately leading to tragedy. Jose becomes obsessed with Carmen and finds himself unable to control his jealousy, which forces him to make a deadly decision in this fiery story of love and betrayal.
Based on the novel by Prosper Merimee, CARMEN is the classic tale of forbidden passion between a young man (Leonardo Sbaraglia) and a spoken-for woman, Carmen (Paz Vega). It is told in flashback as the young soldier, stripped of his decorations, explains all in a prison cell. He tells of the love he had for Carmen and how it proved to be destructive.
Cheating Notes
In the first hour and more of the movie, we see how the relationship evolves between Carmen and the young soldier Jose. It is a toxic relationship for Jose as he gets used, manipulated, and emotionally hurt by Carmen. They have sex, etc. It culminates in Jose killing a lieutenant at the brothel that Carmen works in because of jealousy. Jose joins Carmen's gang and becomes a bandit since then.
(Spoiler) At around 1:18:00, it is revealed to Jose that Carmen has a husband and he has just gotten out of prison and is going to join them.
One night inside the gang's cave hideout, Carmen comes to Jose's sleeping area and fucks him after her husband has fallen asleep.
After Carmen's husband dies, she cheats on Jose with a successful matador. Jose goes to the matador's mansion with a gun, enters his bedroom, finds him and Carmen fucking in bed, and shoots and blows his brains out.
