In a Slavonian village, in 1960s, a rich man Marko offers Janja to marry his son Iva, which Janja sees as the perfect opportunity for her dreams to come true.
Marrying the son of a wealthy village landlord seems to be a dream come true for a young day laborer. However, marriage to a man burdened with a shameful secret in the village where he lives, making him a hostage to his sickly traditional and devout mother and a ruthless but charming father, will be a trap of lies, dark lust, traditionalism, and deviant piety for the laborer. When she realizes she was chosen only to complete their picture of a "holy family," the situation spirals out of control, and the image turns into a mockery.
Cheating Notes
Janja marries Iva, the son of Marko, a wealthy village landlord (32:51). Iva isn't too happy and doesn't consummate their marriage on their supposed honeymoon. In the morning, Iva's mother puts chicken blood on the couple's bed sheet to give a pretense that they did consummate their marriage.
Marko forces himself on Janja (55:46, 57:09). He screws her up against a wall. He tells her he wants to give her something she doesn't have: a kid. This scene is non-nude.
Marko forces himself on Janja again (1:14:51). She resists violently initially, but then gives in and has passionate sex with her father-in-law. This scene has above-shoulder shots only.
After sex with her father-in-law, Janja washes her body roughly, as if trying very hard to get rid of the guilt she feels. She then faces her husband nude (1:17:71).
(spoiler)
Iva reveals to Janja why he won't screw her, or why he couldn't (1:19:57). It's because he has no dick, bitten off by a pig when he was a child. Janja now understands why he rejected her and swears she will love him from now on.
The couple becomes happy for a while, but Iva finds out Janja is pregnant. And since he's 100% sure that he isn't the father of the baby in her womb, due to the fact that he has no dick, he gets mad and beats her up.
