Shuichi and Nobuko are an ordinary, young couple, a promising company employee and his pretty wife. They think nothing can mar their peaceful life but nothing is permanent in this world and Shuichi's company goes bankrupt. Shuichi feels lost. He misses the good times he had at bars and cabarets, especially Hiromi, a hostess. Nobuko offers to work while he hunts for a job and finds an opening at an advertising company. But as Nobuko makes the rounds of restaurants and cabarets, she finds she cannot get ads just by dint of hard work alone. All the shop owners and managers expect her to sleep with them for each big ad they buy. At first, Nobuko is shocked but, to eat, she must meet their demands.
Cheating Notes
After her husband gets fired from his job, the wife asks her husband's former schoolmate to find him a job at the firm he's working at. When the former schoolmate seems to be having a hard time doing it, the wife gives him a hint that she might sleep with him if he succeeds(42:21). When it finally happens, the wife keeps her word and sleeps with him (49:18).
When the wife sees her husband's former schoolmate again (58:39, we don't see the actual lovemaking here), a car salesman (who could be her neighbor's husband or lover but I'm not so sure) sees them come out of the hotel. He tells his wife/lover and she informs the wife's husband.
The husband waits outside the hotel where his wife and his former schoolmate are having their tryst (1:01:24). He sees them come out later and confirms that they are cheating on him.
In the following days, the husband acts out toward his wife at home and his former schoolmate, now co-worker, at work. But he doesn't confront them about their affair. He looks so torn, but he's no angel either because he also has a mistress himself.
