College and high school serve as the backdrop for two stories about dysfunction and personal turmoil. In the first story, college student Vi (Selma Blair), together with her cerebral palsy-stricken boyfriend, is in a writing class with black teacher Mr. Scott. After having a quarrel with her boyfriend, she goes to a bar and comes across Mr. Scott. This leads to a one-night stand between them. In the second story, failed actor Toby Oxman (Paul Giamatti) is trying to make a documentary about teenagers. He recruits apathetic student Scooby Livingston and his parents (John Goodman, Julie Hagerty).
Vi's (Selma Blair) one-night stand with her black teacher is at 17:30. He is the dominant type. He tells her to say "Nigga, fuck me hard!" repeatedly while he fucks her from behind up against a wall. After that, Vi comes to her boyfriend's place crying, hugs him, and reconciles with him.
