A family wins a magazine contest to adopt Victor, an eighty-five-year-old man, an arrangement that eventually leads the wife into an affair with the magazine’s editor-in-chief. At one point, they have sex on the kitchen sink while her husband lies passed out on the couch.
Marie de Mézières, a beautiful young aristocrat, is in love with Henri de Guise but gets married by arrangement to Philippe de Montpensier. Eventually, she fends off the advances of the King’s brother and rekindles her relationship with Henri.

A young writer begins an affair with an older woman from France whose open marriage to a diplomat dictates that they can meet only between the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
