This is a contemporary adaptation of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's novel Manji, reimagined with reversed genders to depict a destructive love story between men and women. Kōtarō Sonoda, unable to give up his dream of becoming a painter, quits his office job and starts attending art school. At school, he encounters a beautiful young man named Mitsuru Usami or Hikaru. Sonoda invites Usami to his home, leading to a physical relationship and growing distance from his wife, Yayoi. However, it is later revealed that Usami has a fiancée.
Cheating Notes
Sonoda invites Hikaru to his home to paint him (15:13). This leads to a gay affair between them.
Hikaru calls Sonoda and asks him to go to a hotel. When Sonoda gets there, he is surprised to find a chick instead of Hikaru, already naked down to her bra and panties. (31:10). The chick tells him that she is Hikaru's fianceé. I initially thought that she is there to have sex with Sonoda, possibly with the permission of Hikaru, but it doesn't seem to be the case. After Sonoda leaves, Hikaru comes out of the bathroom.
Sonoda and Hikaru get admitted to the hospital but in separate adjoining rooms. After exiting her husband's room, Yayoi, Sonoda's wife, comes inside Hikaru's room (59:31). She runs her hand on his cheek down to her chest, and even further down, but Hikaru wakes up and suddenly grabs her hand. He pulls her down and kisses her (1:00:34). She mounts him, takes her clothes off, and rides him.
Hikaru begins living with Sonoda and Yayoi at the couple's place. One night, Yayoi comes home late and explains to Sonoda and Hikaru that she ran into a senior and went out for drinks with him (1:08:36). The usually meek Hikaru suddenly displays a dominant demeanor towards Yayoi. He demands that she inform him in advance whenever she plans on doing something like this. Then, he suddenly shouts at her, telling her never to do it again. She breaks down in tears and begs for his forgiveness—all in front of Sonoda, who remains completely silent.
After their confrontation in the living room, Yayoi and Hikaru have sex beside Sonoda while he pretends to sleep (1:10:55). Yayoi rides Hikaru vigorously, likely aroused by his sudden display of authority earlier. Sonoda, lying on his side, can no longer ignore the couple's moans; admitting defeat and helplessness, he reaches into his pajamas and begins to masturbate as well.
We see a shot of the three naked with sheets covering half of their bodies, lying on the bed (1:18:28).
Hikaru gives Sonoda and Yayoi pills and kisses each of them after they take the pills (1:19:21).
