There are three stories of women and men: in "A Time for Love" set in 1966, a soldier searches for a young woman he met one afternoon playing pool; "A Time for Freedom," set in a bordello in 1911, revolves around a singer's longing to escape her surroundings; in "A Time for Youth" set in 2005 Taipei, a triangle in which a singer has an affair with a photographer while her partner suffers is dramatized. In the first two stories, letters are crucial to the outcome; in the third, it's cell-phone calls, text messages, and a computer file. Over the years between the tales, as sexual intimacy becomes more likely and words more free, communication recedes.
Cheating Notes
In the third story, "A Time for Youth", Shu Qi is cheating on her female girlfriend with a male photographer. They have at least three presex make-out and petting scenes.
I like the part where Shu Qi uses her deception technique to leave her sleeping girlfriend in the middle of the day and step out for three hours to fuck her lover (unfortunately, we only see their dimly-lit presex make-out scene as soon as she and the photographer step into his place). After her girlfriend wakes up and finds her gone, she writes in Shu Qi's computer something to this effect: That she knows that Shu Qi stepped out before 12:45, leaving her phone to make her think that she just stepped out for a minute, that it's already 3:33 pm so she's then out for almost three hours, and that Shu qi knows that she'll be awake at around 4:00 PM so she must be planning to come back before that time, not expecting that she will wake up earlier.
Summary
No nudity and full-on sex scene, but nice make-out and petting scene in the early part of the story. I wish that this movie was made in the mid-'90s where Shu Qi was still taking her clothes off and having sex on-screen (like in Sex and Zen II or Street Angels) so that we can see her really fuck the photographer's brains out. Nevertheless, I really like her so I can still fap to this.
