Tina Balser is a bored New York housewife-mother married to Jonathan, a pompous, social-climbing lawyer who ridicules her in front of their offsprings, criticizing everything she does or wears. She begins an affair with George Prager, a dashing, successful and blatantly sadistic writer.

The husbands are satisfied with their lot, but the wives are not. Sarah describes a situation in which dissatisfied and bored middle-class housewives seek excitement and adventure outside their marital homes and beds.
